I’ve always been a fan of Peter Brock’s BRE Datsun race cars since I bought a model BRE Datsun 240Z at a swap meet when I was about ten years old. The iconic red, white, and blue BRE racing colors cast their spell on me; there was a certain “cool” factor about their Datsun race cars that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. On May 24th at Motoring J Style, we are overjoyed to honor BRE and the beginnings of Japanese car racing in America.
This special feature, focusing on the BRE racing team and based around the launch of Nissan’s new GT-R supercar, will be highlighted by a guest appearance and presentation by legendary racing car constructor Peter Brock. Brock and his Datsun 510s shocked the world in 1971 and 1972 by winning the Trans-Am Championship against stiff competition from Alfa Romeo and BMW. His triumph in that series arguably began the Japanese sport compact car revolution that continues to this day. Nissan North America will honor these achievements by showing the 1972 Datsun 510 race car that John Morton drove to victory in the Trans-Am series. John Morton and other members of the BRE racing team are expected to be on hand to visit with fans and sign autographs. The following is an excerpt from Peter and Gayle Brock’s BRE Newsletter: “We're excited to announce our participation at this year's Motoring J Style event. In a special presentation, Peter will describe the events and stories of the early history of Japanese racing in America. Peter's role started quietly enough in a Hino Contessa 900 in Cal Club racing events, to the sensation created in Japan when headlines declared that a Hino Contessa 1300, with Peter driving, was the winner of the Riverside Grand Prix (a slight over-exaggeration by the Japanese media which made Peter an instant hero in Japan), to the stunning BRE Hino Samurai he unveiled at the Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji Speedway with Japanese movie start Toshiro Mifune acting as BRE's honorary team manager, to the Championship winning BRE Datsuns. Peter will go thru it all with extensive photos from our archives. It'll be quite a treat. There will also be autograph sessions and we'll have a space in the vendor area where we will unveil Peter's latest project, code-named "Datzilla". A stock "looking" 510 on the outside that breaths fire on the inside with a fuel-injected Corvette ZZ3 engine with 550hp and everything from inside the grill to inside the trunk customized with the goal of contemporary "giant killer" in mind.”
